Rediscovering old hymns and writing new ones

I recently discovered a group of musicians who enjoy digging up 2-300 year old hymns and putting them to new music. They are very skilled, and the hymns they have chosen express great, biblical truth. I can’t remember a time I have been more encouraged by music than during the past month or so. The name of the group is Indelible Grace. From their website you can listen to song samples and order a few different albums. They have done a total of four albums of reworked hymns, and one of the artists, Sandra McCracken, has a solo album of hymns, both old and new. It really is wonderful music. If you enjoy the words of the great hymns, but aren’t always aided in your worship by the old melodies, I would encourage you to take a listen. Hopefully we’ll be able to introduce a few of them in the coming months at Sovereign Grace Fellowship, so it’s also a great way to be prepared to join us in worshiping God corporately!

(BTW, thanks to Josh for first pointing me to their website!)

And just to whet your appetite, here is a sampling of the great lyrics from one of the hymns:

Sovereign grace o’er sin abounding!
Ransomed souls, the tidings swell;
’Tis a deep that knows no sounding;
Who its breadth or length can tell?
On its glories,
Let my soul for ever dwell.

What from Christ that soul can sever,
Bound by everlasting bands?
Once in Him, in Him for ever;
Thus the eternal covenant stands.
None shall take Thee
From the Strength of Israel’s hands.

Heirs of God, joint-heirs with Jesus,
Long ere time its race begun;
To His name eternal praises;
O what wonders love has done!
One with Jesus,
By eternal union one.

On such love, my soul, still ponder,
Love so great, so rich, so free;
Say, while lost in holy wonder,
Why, O Lord, such love to me?
Hallelujah!
Grace shall reign eternally.

    Thanks Josh and Brad for directing us to the Indelible Grace website. The songs there seem to have a lot of “substance” to them also. Its such a blessing to be in song and to realize that we are praising the Lord with a psalm or other Scripture. Think it is also great to do some of the old hymns by the original tunes, but then to have artists such as Steve Camp or Third Day (Psalm 36:5)!
    Anyway, thanks for leading the music. I know I have been richly blessed.
